“The idea for the novel came to me while watching a documentary on TV about the gladiators who fought in the arena during the Roman Empire. Back then, it was common for people to watch gladiators butcher each other in the arena. I thought that, in our time, if spectators were to see other people being brutally killed in a stadium (just as gladiators were killed in the arena), those spectators would be utterly horrified. Of course, in our time, fights in which people are allowed to kill each other right before the eyes of spectators are strictly prohibited by law. What was common in the Roman Empire is now something terrible, unacceptable, and prohibited by law. And then, while watching that documentary, I said to myself: ‘What if, in the future, after many years, what seems common and accepted by everyone today becomes something unacceptable, something terrible, something that must be prohibited by law?’ And that’s how the idea for this novel came to me. Stories, movies, and novels have always fascinated me. For me, watching a good movie or reading a captivating novel is one of the most beautiful ways to spend free time. I know that when you choose a novel to read, you want that novel to surprise you, to delight you, to make you read and get to the next page, the next chapter as quickly as possible. And at the end of that novel, you want to have the biggest surprise, something you would never have expected, something that will be a memorable reading experience for you.
